Through close-reading of an American novel and several short stories, students will develop the skills not only to understand the content of literary works, but also to analyze their rhetoric in detail.
What expectations do we have when we read a book? Many people may pick up a book, thinking it will familiarize them with cultures of distant lands, events from the past, or perspectives of different races, sexualities, or social classes. And it is rare for those expectations to be unfulfilled. But what happens to the knowledge we gain from a story, afterward? Some of it may have a significant impact on our inner lives, while other parts may leave little impression. Simply acquiring knowledge does not in itself change us.
In this course, we will focus on American writers who explored how to instill knowledge (information) into sensibility (feeling and perception). By looking not only at what is depicted—at the level of content or morals—but also at how it is depicted, with a focus on the rhetorical dimension, we will discuss the ways in which these authors sought to affect the reader’s sensibility.

アメリカの小説と複数の短編作品を精読し、内容を正確に理解するだけでなく、レトリックを細かく分析する能力を養う。

本を読むとき、私たちはどのような期待を胸に抱いているでしょうか。遠くの土地の文化や、過去に起こった出来事、異なる人種・セクシュアリティ・階級の視点を知ることができる——そのように考えて、本を手に取る人は多いかもしれません。そして、その期待が裏切られることは稀でしょう。しかし、物語から得られた知識は、その後どうなるでしょうか。私たち自身の考え方や感じ方に大きな影響を与えるものもあれば、たいした印象を残さないものもあるはずです。なにかを知ったところで、それだけでは人は変わりません。
この授業では、知識（情報）を感性（心の動き）に変える方法を探ったアメリカの作家たちに焦点を当てます。「なにが描かれているか」という内容や教訓のレベルにとどまらず、「どのように描かれているか」というレトリックの次元に着目し、各作家たちがいかに読者の感性に訴えかけようとしたかを考えていきましょう。
