We will explore hip-hop—a street culture born in the United States during the 1970s—as a comprehensive art form, examining its connections to the political and economic contexts that shaped it, and contemplating the potential of culture and art as we enter the 21st century.
This course explores and seeks to understand how hip-hop culture—often described in stereotypical terms—actually emerges and is enjoyed and consumed within specific political, social, and technological conditions, as well as within the dynamics between creators and audiences. It specifically examines rap and DJing, focusing on their relationship with street art/graffiti and (street) fashion as subjects. Some texts used are in English, requiring English proficiency at the compulsory education level.

1970年代にアメリカ合衆国で生まれたヒップホップ（＝ストリートカルチャー）を総合芸術として捉え、その背景としての政治・経済との関わりも含め、文化・芸術の21世紀にいたり汲み尽くせぬ可能性について共に考えていく。
We will explore hip-hop—a street culture born in the United States during the 1970s—as a comprehensive art form, examining its connections to the political and economic contexts that shaped it, and contemplating the potential of culture and art as we enter the 21st century.
紋切り型で形容されがちなヒップホップという文化が、実際にはどのような政治的／社会的／技術的な条件や、送り手と受け手の関係のありようのなかで生まれていき、享受・消費されているかを探り、理解するようにつとめる。特にラップとDJが、その関連のなかでのストリート・アート／グラフィティ、（ストリート）ファッションをその題材としてとりあげる。使用するテキストは英語のものもあり、義務教育程度の英語の力を要する。
