cultural history (middle age, early new age) for visualising of histories in the bible
Visual perception is overwhelmingly dominant in human cognition, and therefore stories transmitted orally or in writing are almost always symbolized. The stories of the Bible are among the most enduring human stories. Religions have always resisted the idea of representing God, or more generally, religion, and some even prohibit it to this day. This lecture examines the stories of the Christian Bible as an example, examining when and how stories were represented in German-speaking countries, the media used for representation, and how those media have changed over time in the Middle Ages and early modern period. In addition to representations in media directly related to church architecture, illustrations in manuscripts and printed books are also included. Furthermore, we will examine the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western representations by comparing them with Buddhist art in Japan.

聖書を例に「物語り」がいかにヴィジュアル（表象）化されるかを中世・近世初期を中心に文化史的にたどり，仏教美術との類似・相違についても考察する。

人間の認知は視覚が圧倒的に優勢であり，それ故に口頭で伝えられる・文字で伝えられるストーリーは必ずと言ってよいほどヴィジュアル（表象）化される。人類で最も長いこと伝わっているストーリー（物語り）のひとつは聖書中の物語りである。神を表象化すること，より一般的に言うと宗教を表象化することに対してはどの宗教でも最初は抵抗があり，実際現在に至るまで表象化を禁じている宗教もある。ここではキリスト教の聖書中の物語りを例に，ドイツ語圏において，いつ頃から，どのように，どの物語りが表象化されたのか，表象を担う媒体は何であったのか，その媒体はどのように変遷してきたのか，を中世・近世初期に関して概観する。教会建築に直接かかわる媒体上の表象以外にも，写本・印刷本における挿絵も考察対象に含める。また日本における仏教美術との比較で洋の東西の表象の相似点と相違点についても考察する。
