In the history of colonialism by the West, centering on France, various representations of the colonies and the “Black” have been produced. By critically examining these colonial and “Black” representations, we will acquire a way of thinking to understand the West's gaze toward others and the West as highlighted by others.
From the 15th century to the early 19th century, Western Europe colonized Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. France still makes the Caribbean and Pacific islands part of the nation as overseas departments. Throughout this history, various levels of colonial and “Black” representation were created at human and cultural crossroads. At times, the power of these representations led to the abolition of slavery, and at other times, the representations fostered discrimination and prejudice. In this class, we will examine these representations in Western Europe, particularly in France. We will also discuss issues of colonialism that continue to the present day through an overview of the influence of the “Black” in the arts and the evolution of the Negritude movement. A reaction paper will be assigned in each class, and an essay test will be given in the final class.

フランスを中心とした西欧による植民地主義の歴史において、植民地や「黒人」をめぐるさまざまな表象が生み出されてきた。こうした植民地表象・「黒人」表象を批判的に検討することで、西欧が他者にむける眼差しを理解するための思考、あるいは他者によって浮き彫りにされる西欧を理解するための思考を身につける。

15世紀から19世紀前半まで、西欧はアフリカ、アジア、カリブ海を植民地化してきた。フランスは、現在でもカリブ海や太平洋の島々を海外県として国家の一部にしている。こうした歴史において、人的・文化的交差のなかでさまざまなレベルの植民地表象および「黒人」表象が生み出されていった。ある時は表象の力によって奴隷制は廃止へと向かい、またある時は表象が差別や偏見を助長することになった。授業では、とりわけフランスを中心とした西欧におけるこうした表象のあり方を検討する。また芸術分野への「黒人」の影響、あるいはネグリチュード運動の変遷などを概観することで、現在にまでつながる植民地主義の問題についても議論する。毎回の授業ではリアクションペーパーが課され、最終授業では論述テストを実施する。
