【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

19世紀末のイギリスの作家R. L. スティーヴンソンの作品を広範に読解することで、19世紀後半にイギリスが直面していた自己と他者の問題について考えることがこの授業の目的である。ホラー小説・冒険小説・南洋小説など、様々なジャンルにまたがり作品を執筆したスティーヴンソンが、常に自己に内在する他者性に目を向けていることに注目し、19世紀イギリスにおいて自己と他者がどのようにとらえられ、表象されていたのかを理解する。

The aim of this course is to explore issues of the self and the other in late nineteenth-century Britain through a broad reading of works by Robert Louis Stevenson. By examining a wide range of Stevenson’s fiction, such as horror, adventure, and South Seas writing, students will focus on his interest in otherness inherent in the self, and will deepen their understanding of how the concepts of self and other were perceived and represented in nineteenth-century British culture.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

スティーヴンソンは、ゴシック要素の強い「ジキル博士とハイド氏」や少年向けの冒険小説である『宝島』、スコットランドの歴史を扱う『さらわれて』、あるいは「壜の小鬼」などの南洋ものなど、多様なテーマを扱った作家である。この授業では、講義形式でスティーヴンソンの作品を解説し、これらの様々なトピック―ゴシック要素と精神分析、冒険とイギリス帝国主義、スコットランドとナショナル・アイデンティティ、植民地主義と西洋―について論じ、スティーヴンソンがいかに19世紀イギリスにおける自己と他者の境界を探ろうとしていたのかを明らかにする。近代的な自己をたちあげる中で、他者がどのように関わるのかを、スティーヴンソンの作品の多様な自己／他者表象を確認することで理解する。毎回の授業ではリアクションペーパーが課され、最終授業では論述テストを実施する。

Robert Louis Stevenson is a writer who treated with a wide range of themes across diverse genres, including the gothic novel, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, the adventure novel for boys, Treasure Island, the historical novel Kidnapped, which deals with Scottish history, and South Seas fiction such as “The Bottle Imp.”
In this lecture-based course, students will be introduced to Stevenson’s works through close analysis. By examining a variety of topics—including gothic elements and psychoanalysis, adventure and British imperialism, Scotland and national identity, and colonialism and the West—the course will explore how Stevenson investigated the boundary between the self and the other in nineteenth-century Britain. Through an analysis of the diverse representations of the self and the other in his works, students will gain an understanding of how the modern self is constructed in relation to otherness. Students will submit a reaction paper for each class, and take a written exam in the final class.
