Students will learn the basics of historical development of Christian architectures and illuminated manuscripts from Early Christianity to the Renaissance. Not only the changes in styles, but also cultural and social backgrounds will be considered to understand the essence of masterpieces. Students will understand how to describe the some medieval pictures with the iconographic images in Biblical texts. We will be able to distinguish characteristic styles, for example church architects in Western historicist styles.
Following the historical and social background, we will learn the developments of church architecture from its birth,as well as an understanding of its basic structure and philosophy. We will understand the characteristics and iconography of medieval art reading representative examples of manuscript illustrations that changed with the spread of Christianity. Perform small tests approximately 4 to 5 times at the end of each category.

ヨーロッパ中世の建築、写本を対象に扱うのでルネサンス以降の絵画中心の西洋美術史とは扱う作品が異なる。美術史を履修してる必要はないが、高校レベルの世界史やキリスト教の基本的な知識があることが望ましい。
パソコンやスマートフォンなどリアクションペーパーの短文を記入できるデバイスを持参のこと。
出席もとるが、平常点はリアクションペーパーの提出をもって加点されるので授業内に忘れずに提出すること。

キリスト教美術をはぐくんだ教会建築と信仰を支えてきた聖書写本挿絵を中心に、ルネサンス以前までの中世の時代を概観し、様式の発展とその思想的、社会的背景とともに理解する。写本に代表される中世の美術鑑賞の特質を掴み、自分の言葉で説明できるようになること、キリスト教教会を訪れた際に歴史的な建築モチーフを見出せるようになることを目標とする。

歴史的な背景を追いながら教会建築の誕生から発展、基本的な構造と社会的な思想を解説する。キリスト教の伝播とともに変化する代表的な写本挿絵作例を用いて中世美術の特徴や図像学的な解説を行う。理解度を確認するための小テストを各カテゴリの区切りごとに4～5回ほど行う予定である。
