The course will examine the relationship between music and Christianity, entertainment and morality by acquainting the students with representative works of oratorio and related genres, particularly in the 18th/19th century in the German-speaking world.
Oratorios are large-scale works composed for solo voice, chorus and orchestra. They are based on religious subjects and often have scripts based on the Bible. In this lecture, the characteristics of the script and music, the composers’ life and the background of the works will be examined. In each class, the works will be analysed using the scores. No musical ability (practical skills, musical notation, etc.) is required, but active interest and motivation are essential. The lyrics are mainly in German, but also in English, French and Latin, so students are expected to make an effort to understand the content based on the bilingual translation provided in class.

18/19世紀のドイツ語圏を中心に、オラトリオと周辺ジャンルの代表作を知り、音楽とキリスト教、娯楽と建徳の関係を考察する。
The course will examine the relationship between music and Christianity, entertainment and morality by acquainting the students with representative works of oratorio and related genres, particularly in the 18th/19th century in the German-speaking world.
オラトリオは、独唱と合唱、オーケストラのために作曲された大規模、大編成の作品である。宗教的な内容を題材とし、聖書に基づく台本が多い。この講義では、台本や音楽の特徴、作曲家の生涯や、作品成立の背景などを検討する。毎回の授業では作品を実際に聴き、楽譜を用いながら分析を加える。音楽的能力（実技、楽典等）は問わないが、積極的な関心と意欲は必須。また、歌詞は主にドイツ語、加えて、英語、フランス語、ラテン語などの外国語なので、授業で配布する対訳をもとに、内容を理解しようとする努力を期待する。
