【Course Objectives】

This course invites students to explore and engage with traditional Japanese music through listening, live performances, and direct engagement with musicians and instruments. A guiding question will shape our inquiry: How can listeners deepen their enjoyment, appreciation, and understanding of traditional Japanese music through active engagement with its unique aesthetic principles and cultural contexts? Students will learn about core aesthetic concepts such as ma (temporal or spatial interval), sawari (resonant “buzz”), and tatami-komi (convolution rhythms) to develop a richer appreciation for silence and sound in traditional Japanese music. By examining traditional and contemporary genres that feature traditional Japanese instruments, we’ll see how contemporary artists keep these traditions culturally alive. Students will gain the tools to connect with Japanese music on a deeper level, appreciating its relevance within today’s media and performance landscapes.

【Course Contents】

This course offers an immersive study of traditional Japanese music by examining its performance techniques, sound qualities, and evolving cultural roles. Students will explore both traditional and modern genres through live demonstrations and workshops led by active musicians, experiencing firsthand how traditional music remains vibrant and relevant today. In addition to learning about the unique sounds and techniques of instruments like the shakuhachi, koto, and shamisen, students will develop the ability to discern the aesthetic qualities—such as timing, tone, and sonic textures—that define Japanese music yet sometimes make it challenging to penetrate. Through active engagement with modern performers, students will gain a perspective that enables them to recognise and appreciate traditional genres within today’s cultural context, expanding their understanding of Japanese music beyond strict traditional transmission, and connecting with it as modern listeners. The course will culminate in a research project, where students present their findings on the question, “How can we, as modern listeners, understand and appreciate Japanese sound?”
