備考/ NotesNotes |
The course provides an introduction to the evolution of cultural values, practices, and production in different historical periods with an emphasis on the modern age and on contemporary trends. Major historical shifts, new traditions, and popular products will be presented along multi-disciplinary theories of cultural studies, neo-liberalism, and social sciences. During the lessons, students will be able to present their own opinions, gain new academic knowledge, and practice various skills of analysis while focusing on their own favorite themes and interests.
Products and habits that seem trivial and common in daily life carry deeper meanings that go beyond entertainment and fun. They reflect ideologies and values of the institutions that produce them, and they deliver hidden messages to the audience. Throughout the course, students will observe different cultural habits, examine popular products, and develop their own ideas and independent analysis skills according to their themes and topics of interest. The course will focus on specific case studies from different fields of culture, such as manga, anime, kawaii culture, J-Pop, real and virtual idols, subcultures, fashion, entertainment, and more.
