This course has the following objectives:
(1) It has been said that "non-Western" music, such as Japanese or Oriental music, has no history, no sheet music, and no set temperament. But the truth is just the opposite. In this course, I will abolish the past misconception that "non-Western is primitive". Then the goal of all these classes is to correctly understand the long history of Japanese music through gagaku.
(2) The goals of each class are to gain a general understanding of the musical instruments, repertoire, costumes, and events that have been handed down in modern times, to understand the positioning of Gagaku within the global context, and to learn a wide range of the history and culture of it.
(3) The ultimate goal of this course is for you to be able to introduce Gagaku to others.
(4) Although this is not the objective of this course, I would like you to think about the question on a daily basis: why modern people learn ancient cultures and transmit them?
In this course, you will learn Japanese music with a focus on Gagaku. In Japan, it has not only served as a source for other musical fields, but has also been deeply connected to the art, architecture, literature, religion, and other cultures surrounding music. It has also become well-known both domestically and internationally in recent years. In this course, you will acquire a basic and correct understanding of it. This course also includes practical training to sing songs of it.

本授業には以下の目標があります。
（１）日本または東洋などの「非西洋」の音楽には、歴史がない、楽譜がない、音律の定めがない、などのイメージがあります。しかし実際は真逆です。本授業では「非西洋＝未開」という過去の誤認を廃止します。その上で授業の全回を貫く目標として、雅楽を通して、日本音楽の長い歴史を正しく理解することを目指します。
（２）授業の各回の目標は、現代に伝承されている楽器・曲目・装束・行事等を大まかに理解することや、世界規模の広がりの中に雅楽を位置付けて理解すること、雅楽の歴史的・文化的な広がりを理解することです。
（３）授業の最終目標は、受講生が雅楽を他人に紹介できるようになっていることです。
（４）授業目標ではありませんが、「なぜ現代人は古くから続く文化を習い伝えるのか」という問いについて日頃から考えてください。

本授業では、雅楽を主軸にして日本音楽を学びます。日本において雅楽は他の音楽分野の源泉となるのみならず、音楽周辺の美術・建築・文学・宗教などの文化とも深く関わってきました。また、近年に国内外でよく知られるようになりました。そのような雅楽に関して、本授業では初歩的かつ正しい理解を身に付けます。なお、授業には受講生が歌曲を歌う実習もあります。
