備考/ NotesNotes |
This course will examine ‘The Picturebook,’ as a genre of literature, an artform and a representation of societies, cultures and history. Picturebooks combine visual text – pictures, and verbal text – words, and have their own peritext - which are the individual parts of the book, e.g., the front and back cover, dedication or endpapers. We will explore the work of a variety of authors/illustrators, and through the picturebooks selected, will also discuss a range of themes, such as friendship, resilience and embracing diversity.
This course will allow students to gain deeper specialist knowledge and examine in detail various examples of well-known English children's literature. In each class, a selection of famous picturebooks created by a range of author/illustrators, both past and present, will be presented and discussed.
Students will learn specialist terminology and develop their own criteria for describing and assessing these picturebooks. Common themes such as friendship, resilience and celebrating or embracing diversity will be discussed by participants from both the characters’ and their own perspective in pairs and small groups.
Students training to be English instructors at primary, junior-high, or high-school level, as well as anyone interested in literature, and ways to enjoy children's literature with their own, or future, children will find this course valuable.
