Notes

【Course Objectives】

Students will actively examine ‘The Picturebook,’ as a genre of literature, an art form and a representation of societies, cultures and history. Picturebooks combine visual text–pictures, and verbal text–words, and have their own peritext, which are the individual parts of the book, e.g., the front and back cover, dedication or endpapers.
Students will actively and collaboratively explore the work of a variety of authors/illustrators and, through the picturebooks selected, will also discuss a range of themes, including relevant social issues, such as forced migration, food insecurity, homelessness, poverty, bullying, and turning to crime. Other themes, such as celebrating diversity, investigating the meaning and importance of friendship, loss or grief, and maintaining or improving mental health through Social Emotional Learning (SEL), will also be covered.
Students will do a short presentation (20 mins), write a reflection report on that presentation, as well as write a final report (1,500 words) on a picturebook of their choice from the vast library available.

【Course Contents】

This course will allow students to gain deeper specialist knowledge and examine in detail various examples of well-known English children's literature. In each class, a selection of famous picturebooks created by a range of author/illustrators, both past and present, will be available for examination and discussion by students.
Students will learn specialist terminology and develop their own criteria for discussing, describing, analysing and assessing these picturebooks. Common themes such as forced migration, economic hardship, friendship, loss, maintaining mental health and celebrating or embracing diversity will be discussed by participants from both the characters’ and their own perspectives in pairs and small groups.
Students training to be English instructors at primary, junior-high, or high-school level, as well as anyone interested in literature, and ways to enjoy children's literature with their own or future children, will find this course valuable.
By the end of the course, students will have:
(i) Read, analyzed and discussed in pairs or groups many well-known children's books in English.
(ii) Learnt how to analyse and comment on a picturebook using correct terminology.
(iii) Discussed themes from picturebooks, such as social issues, friendship or recognising and embracing diversity.
(iv) Done a short presentation (20 mins) and reflective report on a picturebook of their choice.
(v) Written a final report (1,500 words) on a picturebook of their choice.
