Notes

【Course Objectives】

Based on selected themes, this course teaches Japanese visual culture from the Edo period to the early Meiji era. Through semiotic analysis, close-looking, and discussions, we will analyze the relationship between Japanese society and its artistic creations, as well as its influences on contemporary culture.

【Course Contents】

The goals of this class are for students to:
- Develop a deeper understanding and critical eye for Japanese art and culture.
- Develop the ability to construct what to say as an organized discourse.
- Discuss with insight aspects of Japanese visual culture and the fine arts, as well as its impact on contemporary life.
- Practice formulating and expressing thoughts and ideas in writing and presentation.
