【Course Objectives】

The goal of this seminar is to:
- Provide students with an overview of modern research on religion and ritual, especially from the perspective of cognitive psychology and evolutionary theory.
- Teach students how to critically evaluate research and compare theoretical approaches
- Improve students' abilities to discuss research and communicate opinions
- Introduce students to ongoing debates and new methodological standards

【Course Contents】

The seminar focuses on modern research on religion and ritual, particularly research that adopts an evolutionary or cognitive perspective. Many in Japan an other societies do not follow any specific religion but the majority of people across the world believe in Gods and belong to religious groups. Rituals are also important in all societies and are important aspects of culture. This course examines religion and ritual as a cross-culturally recurrent social phenomenon and examines modern research that explores the psychological and social effects of religious belief and ritual participation.

We begin with introductory lectures to develop research skills, setting a solid foundation for the detailed study of ritual and religion. The course then progresses to cover key topics in these areas, offering a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical analysis. we focus on examining specific research in depth over two weeks. In the first week, students focus on a key study and we discuss the strengths and weaknesses. Then we move on to explore follow-up studies or related research through group discussions and/or reaction papers.

Students are required to make a presentation (15-20 mins) on one selected topic during the course and will be required to submit short reaction papers for certain weeks. Classes throughout are a combination of lectures and group discussion segments.

The course is conducted in English, and the content is adapted to suit the language proficiency of the students. By the end of the seminar, students will have a deeper understanding of key theories in religion and ritual, along with enhanced skills in critical research analysis and effective communication of their ideas.
