This course is a study of the history and thought of Zen, which lies at the root of the spirituality of traditional Japanese culture. The history and thought will be introduced in the light of cutting-edge research, but will not be limited to a mere historical or sectarian commentary on Zen, but will present Zen as a history of ethical thought. This will help students in the final stages of their studies to understand a wide range of values by relativizing the values of those of us living today.
In addition, the practice of zazen will be combined with the study of Zen as an experiential knowledge that goes beyond intellectual understanding, with the aim of enabling students to learn in a deeper way.
In this lecture, we will attempt to understand the intellect and spirituality of Zen from both a physical and mental perspective. For this reason, each lecture will be divided into a first half and a second half, with the first half being a practice of zazen and the second half being a lecture on Zen. If we view Zen as a comprehensive understanding of nondiscriminative wisdom (spirituality) and discriminative wisdom (intellect), then the zazen in the first half is positioned as an approach to spirituality through the body, while the lecture in the second half is positioned as an understanding of Zen intellect.During the zazen time, students will practice mainly traditional Rinzai Zen zazen. In addition, the students will experience various forms of zazen, including Theravada-style Vipassana meditation and mindfulness meditation. In the latter half of the course, students will learn about the history of Zen thought based on cutting-edge Zen research. The course will introduce Zen of each period and region, not simply as a doctrine of Zen Buddhism, but as a history of ethical thought that relates to our daily practice.

本科目は、担当教員の実務経験、または実務に従事するゲスト・スピーカーの招聘講義等を活かした授業である。
この科目は日本の伝統的諸文化の精神性の根柢にある禅の精神について、その歴史・思想を実践を交えながら学ぶ。歴史・思想については現代の最先端の禅研究を踏まえつつも、単に禅宗史の歴史学的・宗学的解説にとどまらず、倫理思想史として禅を提示する。そのことによって現代を生きる私たちの価値観を相対化し、完成期の学生にとって幅広い価値観への理解を助ける。さらに坐禅の実践を併せ行い、知的理解以上の体験知として禅を学ぶことを通じてより深い学びが得られることを目指す。

本講義は禅における知性と霊性について、心身両面からの理解を試みる。そのため各回で授業を前半と後半に分け、前半では坐禅の実習を行い、後半で禅についての講義をする。禅を無分別智（霊性）と分別智（知性）の綜合的把握とした場合、前半の坐禅は身体を通じた霊性へのアプローチ、後半の講義はを禅的知性の把握として位置づけられる。坐禅の時間では伝統的な臨済禅の坐禅を中心に実修し、それだけにとどまらず上座部系のヴィパッサナー瞑想やマインドフルネス瞑想を取り入れることで、多様な坐禅を体験する。後半の講義においては、最先端の禅研究を踏まえて禅の思想史について学ぶ。単なる禅宗の教義ではなく、我々の日常の実践と関わる倫理思想史として、各時代・各地域の禅を紹介していく。
