The course objectives are as follows:
1. To provide an insight into how various community issues were addressed in different communities, both inside and outside of Japan, through the lecturer's first-hand research.
2. To develop critical thinking and analytical skills through engaging in class discussions and debates on these issues.
3. Enhance communication and collaboration skills through sharing personal perspectives and ideas on how to address community challenges through reaction papers and class discussions.
4. Develop a deeper understanding of the cultural and social context of community challenges and adversity in Japan and in other countries.
5. To be able to evaluate and analyze community development projects in New Zealand, Kenya and Japan.
This class will provide an in-depth understanding of community challenges and adversity through the lens of the lecturer's first-hand research and experience in various communities both inside and outside of Japan. It will explore how different community issues are addressed at the grassroots level by examining:
1. The impact of natural disasters such as the Christchurch earthquakes and the Tohoku earthquake on local communities.
2. Local community development projects and education in Kenya.
3. Student led community development projects in Saitama.
4. The impact of tourism on local communities in Japan.
Following each lecture, students will be encouraged to share their own perspectives and opinions on these issues through reaction papers and class discussions. Specific questions will be posed to provoke debate and encourage students to share their own ideas on how to address local community challenges.
