【Course Objectives】

Is a university a place of learning? A place of research? Supposing they are, in what ways are they different from high schools? In this uncertain future of the world, the focus is on “liberal arts” – which is considered the very symbol of learning in many universities - what exactly is it? Will it give us the foresight we need for the uncertain future upon us?
The main goal of this course is to provide a “map” for learning at university and a base so that students know how to make the most of their study; all through elucidating the aforementioned questions. An additional purpose is to provide students a frame for discourse - such as that of how science and technology should be in society - by lecturing on the relationship between universities, science and technology from a historical perspective.

【Course Contents】

We look back on the history of universities, science and technology from the period of ancient Greece until today. During that process, we ask, what is “liberal arts?” How did “universities” form? What is the difference between science, technology, and “science technology?” How did universities develop into places of research for “science technology?” The lecture series will take place as a dialogue and lecture combination. The final class will be a wrap-up discussion for students to summarize what they learned on their own. This discussion will form the basis for them to write a final report.
