In this course, we attempt to deepen our understanding of secularization in Western modernity, especially in terms of Christian thought. Also, we will explore the theme of "post-secularity" (or "post-secularization") and gain a renewed perspective on the status of religion in contemporary society.
Following the discussion of Charles Taylor's A Secular Age (2007), we will reconsider the master narrative of secularization and other related concepts. In his book, Taylor challenges the popular historical understanding, which assumes that the development of rational thought and modern science irreversibly refuted religious faith. In reviewing the critical arguments that Taylor develops against this master narrative of secularization, we will learn how historical transformations in thoughts and practices of Christianity have given rise to today's "secular age."

学びの精神科目
西洋近代における「世俗化」の過程について、とくにキリスト教思想との関連で理解を深めることを目指します。また同時に、近年議論の活発な「ポスト世俗性（化）」というテーマにも関心を広げ、現代社会における宗教の位置づけを問い直す視座を獲得することを目標とします。

チャールズ・テイラー『世俗の時代』（2007）の議論に依拠して、「世俗化」とその周辺の概念について検討します。テイラーは、同書において、合理的な思考や科学の発展により宗教的信仰が不可逆的に論駁されたのだとする歴史理解に異を唱えました。本講義では、支配的な世俗化の物語に対抗してテイラーが提示する批判的論点の数々を確認し、キリスト教の思想と実践に生じた歴史的変容が、いかにして今日の「世俗の時代」を生み出すことになったのかを学びます。
