The aim of this course is to understand the general outline of Western Art History from late antiquity to modern era, by examining specific works of art to comprehend various themes and expressions that Christian culture had produced.
Along with comprehension of Christian themes and iconography, by observing paintings with their eyes and words, students develop the ability to read the visual representations.
To understand Western art, knowledge of Christian culture is essential along with Greek and Roman mythology. In this lecture, we will focus on Western artworks with Christian themes from the early Christian era to the 19th century and examine them from various perspectives, including historical background, art styles and techniques, artists' biographies, religious thought, and gender theory. Students will first grasp the flow of medieval art from late antiquity to Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic. Then, dealing with paintings from the Renaissance to modern times, we take methodological steps as to observe artworks, examine the historical background and artist's biography, then proceed to interpretation. These are necessary for developing practical ability to understand Christian art and Western art history in general.
Since observation and description of works of art will also be conducted, a positive attitude toward the course is expected.

予習（30-60分）：参考文献を読んで西洋美術史の大きな流れや主要な作品、芸術家について確認しておく。

復習（30-60分）：後日配信される講義録画を視聴し、復習と理解の深化に努める。講義で扱ったテーマについて図書館で文献をあたり、ネットで検索してみるなど各自で学びを深め、筆記試験に備える。

・時代の変化とともにキリスト教文化がどのような表現を生み出したかを、具体的な美術作品に即して考察する。
・キリスト教の主題や図像学を理解するとともに、眼と言葉を使って絵画を観察し、図像を読み解く力を身につける。

西洋美術を理解するには、ギリシア・ローマ神話と並んでキリスト教文化の知識が欠かせません。この講義では初期キリスト教時代から19世紀までの西洋美術の中から、キリスト教主題の作品を取り上げ、時代背景、美術様式や技術、芸術家の経歴、宗教思想やジェンダー論などさまざまな視点から考察します。まず古代末期からビザンチン、ロマネスク、ゴシックまで中世美術の流れを確認したうえで、ルネサンスから近代までの絵画作品について、①観察、②時代背景と画家の経歴の確認、③読解を行い、キリスト教美術を見る力を実践的に養います。作品の観察とディスクリプションも行うので積極的な受講態度を期待します。
To understand Western art, knowledge of Christian culture is essential along with Greek and Roman mythology. In this lecture, we will focus on Western artworks with Christian themes from the early Christian era to the 19th century and examine them from various perspectives, including historical background, art styles and techniques, artists' biographies, religious thought, and gender theory. Students will first grasp the flow of medieval art from late antiquity to Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic. Then, dealing with paintings from the Renaissance to modern times, we take methodological steps as to observe artworks, examine the historical background and artist's biography, then proceed to interpretation. These are necessary for developing practical ability to understand Christian art and Western art history in general.
Since observation and description of works of art will also be conducted, a positive attitude toward the course is expected.
