Thirty years have passed since ”Tokyo Subway Gass Attack”, in which the chemical weapon Sarin was sprayed in the heart of Tokyo, resulting in a massive number of casualties. Although the influence of religion seems on the surface to be declining in 21st century society, issues such as “religious extremism,” “politics and religion,” and the “shuko nisei" (religion second generation ) show that even today, the question of what is religious still drives society from the ground up. Through the “Aum Shinrikyo Incident” (1995), which shook Japanese society in the past, this project will consider what meaning religion has in modern society and how we should deal with their own religiosity.
The course will (1) learn as much as possible about the teachings and practices of Aum Shinrikyō without prejudice through documentary films that directly cover the inside of Aum facilities immediately after the Aum Shinrikyō incident and through the writings of Shōkō Asahara himself. The study will then examine (2) the process by which the followers joined Aum and committed heinous acts in absolute obedience to the guru. In this discussion, we will make use of numerous published memoirs of Aum leaders and former believers, as well as reports from court hearings. Finally, we will examine (iii) the social factors that attracted young people to religious organizations such as Aum, by examining the various discussions of Aum that have been submitted so far.

東京の都心で化学兵器サリンが散布され、おびただしい死傷者を出してた「地下鉄サリン事件」から30年が経過した。宗教の影響力が表面上は衰退しつつあるように見える21世紀の社会だが、「宗教過激主義」の問題や「政治と宗教」の問題、あるいは「宗教２世」などの問題は、今日でも宗教的なものへの問いが根底から社会を突き動かしていることを示している。かつて日本社会を震撼させた「オウム真理教事件」（1995年）を通して、現代社会において宗教がどのような意味をもつか、あるいは人は自らの宗教性に対してどう向き合うべきかについて考える。

①事件直後のオウム施設の内部を直接に取材したドキュメンタリー映画や、麻原彰晃自身の著作などを通して、オウム真理教の教えや実践がどのようなものであったかを、できるだけ偏見なしに知る。その上で、②信者たちがオウムに入信し、教祖への絶対服従の中で凶行に走ったプロセスがどのようなものであったかを考察する。考察にあたっては、多数出版されているオウム幹部や元信者の手記、裁判傍聴記などを利用する。最後に、③オウムのような宗教団体に若者が引き寄せられていった社会的要因について、これまでに提出されてきたオウムに関する様々な論考を検討する。
