We will provide an overview of the Christian worldview in Western Europe and examine the “questions” that have emerged from it. Through this process, students are expected to recognize the significance of studying the humanities and to develop their own critical awareness of contemporary issues.
This course is divided into two parts. The first half (Basic) examines the formation and historical transformation of the Christian worldview, while the second half (Applied) addresses “questions” that remain radical even for those of us living today.
In the first half of the course, with beauty as its central theme, students will explore the Western worldview as it has developed over time yet continues to underpin modern thought. The aim is to gain an understanding of some of the fundamental currents of Western philosophy.
In the second half, focusing on the theme of life, students will engage with a range of Western thinkers and reflect on each topic based on the conceptual foundations established in the first half of the course.
This course emphasizes not only reading and listening to the ideas of others, but also articulating one’s own ideas through writing and discussion. Accordingly, group discussions will be conducted in class. In addition, students are required to submit a reaction paper for each class session; please note that excerpts from these papers may be shared in subsequent classes.
Rather than merely acquiring knowledge or cultural literacy, students are encouraged to reflect on themselves and to develop their own questions.
Please note that the course schedule, content, and number of discussion sessions may be subject to change depending on enrollment and other circumstances.

学びの精神科目
西欧のキリスト教的世界像を概観したうえで、紡がれてきた「問い」を考察する。その過程で人文学を学ぶ意義を見いだし、問題意識を培っていただきたい。
We will provide an overview of the Christian worldview in Western Europe and examine the “questions” that have emerged from it. Through this process, students are expected to recognize the significance of studying the humanities and to develop their own critical awareness of contemporary issues.
この講義は、キリスト教的世界像の形成および変遷を扱う前半部（基礎）と現代に生きる私たちにとってもなおラディカルな「問い」を扱う後半部（応用）とに分かれています。
前半部では、この授業の【美】をテーマに、変遷を辿りながらも現代まで通底する西欧の世界観を学び、西欧思想の基本的な流れの一端を理解することが狙いです。後半部では【生命】をテーマとし、それぞれのトピックについて、前半部の理解を踏まえながら、様々な西欧の思想家に触れ、共に考えてゆきます。
この授業では、他者の考えを読む・聞くのみならず、自らの考えを書く・話すことも重要視しています。したがって、グループ・ディスカッションを行う予定です。また、授業毎にリアクションペーパーの提出を課しますが、リアクションペーパーの内容は次回授業で紹介することがあるので注意してください。知識や教養を得ようとするだけではなく、己と向き合い、自分なりの「問い」を見いだそうとする姿勢を歓迎します。
