・Developing a multifaceted understanding of the nature of love
By comparing eros and philia in Greek philosophy with agape in Christian ethics, this course examines the historical and intellectual foundations of the concept of “love” as it is used in everyday life.
・Cultivating the ability to think philosophically
Through engagement with both abstract arguments and concrete examples, students will learn to approach issues from multiple perspectives and to recognize the significance of uncertainty in the process of critical thinking.
・Reconsidering the relationship between self and others
By examining themes such as the commandment to love one’s neighbor as oneself and the critique of narcissism, students will reflect on their own ethical perspectives and ways of relating to others in contemporary society.
・Greek Conceptions of Love (Eros and Philia)
Through the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle, this section examines ancient Greek understandings of love, considering both their appeal and their limitations.
・Christian Conceptions of Love (Agape and Love for One's Neighbor)
Drawing on the Bible, this section explores the new understanding of love articulated in Christianity and considers its influence on social welfare and ideas of human rights.
・The Intellectual History of Love and the Modern World
Tracing the development of ideas about love from the Middle Ages to the present, this section examines what mature forms of love may mean in contemporary society.

• 愛の本質を多角的に理解する：
私たちの身近にある「愛」という言葉について、ギリシア哲学における「エロース」「フィリア」と、キリスト教倫理における「アガペー」の比較を通じて、その歴史的・思想的背景を深く掘り下げる。
• 「哲学的に考える」力を養う：
抽象的な議論と具体的なエピソードを往復することで、物事を多極的な視座から捉え、「わからない」ということの価値を理解し、思考のらせんを上っていく体験を提供する。
• 自己と他者の関係性を再構築する：
自分を愛するように隣人を愛するという教えや、ナルシシズムの克服といったテーマを通じ、現代を生きる自分自身の倫理観や他者への向き合い方を問い直す。
