This course explores the global development and history of animated films, which are often described as a marginal strand within the dominant history of 20th-century cinema. By examining the diversity of animation, its techniques, aesthetics, and history, the course aims to broaden students' understanding of global visual culture.
Throughout history, various forms of animation have been created around the world. Animation is not limited to moving cartoon-like drawings or CGI; it encompasses a wide range of materials and expressive techniques. While animation is often associated with commercial productions, its history is also deeply connected to the context of modern arts. In this course, we will explore the history of global animated films, primarily in the 20th century, through the reading of English-language texts. This study aims not only to deepen students' understanding of animation and visual culture but also to foster a broader global perspective.

Since this course references many historical films, some will be in black and white. Students are expected to engage with and show interest in studying older animated films as well.（歴史的な映像を多く参照するので、白黒のものもあります。古い映像に対しても関心を持って学ぶ姿勢が求められます）

この授業では、20世紀に支配的であった映画の歴史の中でも、傍流として記述されることの多い、アニメーション映画の世界的な展開と歴史を学びます。多様なアニメーションの存在とその手法、美学、歴史を知ることで、グローバルな映像文化への知見を広げることを目的とします。

世界には、歴史的に様々なアニメーション作品が作られてきました。漫画的な絵が動くアニメーションや、CGで作られたものだけでなく、様々な素材と表現がアニメーションには存在します。アニメーションといえば、商業的なものが一般的と思われますが、アニメーションの歴史は、美術の文脈とも関係しています。この授業では、主に20世紀における世界のアニメーション映画の歴史について、英語文献の講読を通して学びます。それにより、アニメーションを中心とした映像文化への知識だけでなく、グローバルな視点を獲得することも目指します。
