The course is designed to enable the student at the Introduction Phase to do the following:
A. Understand the meaning of studying at university with a broad perspective that transcends the barriers of specialized fields.
B. Take lectures effectively.
C. Develop and articulate his/her own ideas through dialogue with faculty and other students.
Christianity, along with Judaism and Islam, is one of the major monotheistic religions. It can be said that Christianity derived and inherited its monotheistic characteristics from Judaism. This course examines how the ancient Israelite religion, which gave rise to Judaism and produced the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), became monotheistic. It does so by exploring the interactions between Israel and the surrounding nations, particularly the Mesopotamian empires.

キリスト教は，ユダヤ教やイスラームとともにいわゆる三大一神教に数えられる。そして，キリスト教はユダヤ教から派生し，その一神教という特徴はユダヤ教から受け継いだものであるといえる。この科目は，そのユダヤ教のもとになり，聖書（キリスト教の呼び方では「旧約聖書」）を生み出した古代イスラエルの宗教がどのようにして一神教となったかを，イスラエルとそれを取り巻く国々，特にメソポタミアの帝国とのかかわりから明らかにする。
