Focusing on medieval European art, this course will provide an overview of its origins, development, and influence on later cultures from the perspective of animal images and symbolism. Students will learn about and deepen their understanding of the multi-layered culture of medieval European art.
In medieval Christian art in Europe, images of Christ and saints are the main subjects. At the same time, many animals also appear around them. Animal images can be found in various media, such as reliefs inside churches, floor mosaics, liturgical objects, and manuscript illustrations. These animals were not only decorative but often had symbolic meanings related to Christian teachings. This course focuses on animal images in medieval Christian art and explores how systems of animal symbolism developed from the early Middle Ages to the late Middle Ages.

本科目は、担当教員の実務経験、または実務に従事するゲスト・スピーカーの招聘講義等を活かした授業である。
ヨーロッパ中世美術を中心に取り上げ、そこに見られる動物表象とシンボリズムという側面から、その成り立ちや展開、後世文化への影響を概観する。ヨーロッパ中世美術の多層的な文化のありようを学び、その理解を深める。

ヨーロッパ中世のキリスト教美術では、キリスト像や聖人図像が主体をなしている。しかし他方その周辺に目を向けると、多くの動物たちの表象が横溢していた。聖堂内部の浮彫り装飾や床モザイク、聖具、写本のミニアチュールなど様々な表現媒体に動物表象が見られるが、それらの多くは単なる装飾に留まらず、神の教えを象徴するものであった。本授業では中世のキリスト教美術の動物表象に注目し、初期中世から中世末期までの動物シンボリズム体系の展開について学ぶ。
