【Course Objectives】

Religion represents one of the major paradoxes in contemporary society. While science and information technology have made remarkable progress, religion's influence has not diminished within our globalizing society. Of course, the 'religion' referred to here does not indicate traditional religion supported by institutions and authority. Needless to say, the number of Christians in Europe continues to decline, and in Japan, the number of household Shinto altars is decreasing, and even Buddhist funeral services are showing a declining trend. This appears to confirm what secularization theorists have claimed: that religion inevitably declines as modernization progresses.

However, when we look at religion beyond institutions and authority, it is undeniable that many contemporary people are strongly attracted to religion or religious elements. In South America, once a stronghold of the Catholic Church, more liberal and enthusiastic Pentecostal Christianity is spreading explosively. Muslims in Southeast Asia eagerly seek guidance for their daily lives from local religious leaders via the internet. In Western countries, meditation, yoga, and charismatic Christianity that has eliminated all traditional forms are gaining popularity as outlets for consumers' spiritual needs. In Japan, many people are enthusiastic about fortune-telling, omikuji (fortune slips), and visiting power spots as tourist destinations. It could be said that contemporary people consume religion much like they consume brands and entertainment.

Looking at the political sphere, we see the remarkable rise of populist nationalists who encourage a return to traditional religious culture. In Western countries, examples abound, including the evangelicals who contributed to President Trump's two election victories, Germany's 'Alternative for Germany (AfD),' and Hungary's 'Fidesz.' We see Putin's Russian Orthodox Church in Russia, Modi's Hinduism in India, and even in Japan, the Japan Conservative Party and Sanseito are promoting Shinto values. While this may not represent a return to traditional religion, the presence of religious elements in the political sphere is undeniable.

To deepen our understanding of these phenomena, this course aims to shed light on religion or religious elements present across multiple domains of contemporary society, analyzing them using three key concepts: secularization, commercialization, and politicization of religion.

【Course Contents】

The first essential step in analyzing religion in contemporary society is to correct our often biased understanding of religion. While many people living in Japan consider themselves non-religious, they actively participate in New Year's shrine visits, draw fortune slips (omikuji), and engage in fortune-telling. These seemingly contradictory behaviors can be understood by examining how the term 'religion' came to be used in modern Japan and the historical background that led to the establishment of religious studies as an academic discipline.

In today's consumer society, consumption is not limited to material goods but includes all kinds of symbols and information, including religious elements. If this is the case, we should consider that our understanding of life and death, which was traditionally influenced by religious institutions, must undergo significant transformation in contemporary times. In addition to these themes, this course will examine the relationship between state and religion, new religious movements and religious fundamentalism, as well as various academic fields that constitute religious studies and their key issues. Through this examination, we aim to clarify what it means to deepen our academic understanding of religion.

This course will primarily consist of lectures with occasional distribution of relevant materials. Additionally, through reflection papers on lectures and materials, as well as group discussions, students will practice the skill of logically expressing their own views.
