The goals of this class are as follows.
Acquire basic knowledge of modern and contemporary Japanese literature.
Acquire a logical way of thinking in order to perceive literary works as objects of research.
To be able to describe the contents and characteristics of literary works based on a broad perspective.
Read Japanese literature (novels) from the Meiji period to the present day in chronological order.
In particular, we will consider the relationship between the city and literature. The novel has been a central genre in modern and contemporary Japanese literature, and its development has been based on, and at the same time dependent on, the solid center of Tokyo. It can be said that the city was one of the infrastructures for modern Japanese literature. The development of Tokyo as a modern city was also shaped by people's lives and their way of living itself, and also influenced literature in various ways.
This course will consider these specific aspects and deepen our understanding of them.

文学作品を研究対象として捉えるための、論理的な思考方法を身につける。
広い視野に基づいて文学作品の内容や表現の特色を述べられるようになる。

明治期から現代にかけての日本文学（小説）を時系列に即して読む。
特に、都市と文学との関係を考える。近現代の日本文学において中心を占めるジャンルとなったのが小説（novel）だったが、その展開は東京という強固な中心を基盤として、同時に依存することによってなされてきた。都市は日本の近代文学にとってのインフラの一つだったと言ってよい。また、近代都市としての東京の発展は、人びとの生活や生きることそのものによって形作られ、また、文学にもさまざまな影響を与えた。
これらの具体的な様相について考え、理解を深める。なお、東京以外の都市が舞台になる作品も含む。
