Students in this course will improve their reading comprehension skills through conducting an intensive reading of American literary works and build their interpretations with a conscious understanding of the work's background, historical period, and literary contexts. In addition, students will cultivate their logical writing skills through weekly response papers.
In this course, we will read Herman Melville's epic novel Moby-Dick (1851), a representative work of nineteenth-century American literature. Although widely recognized as a world classic, this novel is rarely actually read, despite its fame. Given its length (over 1,000 pages in translation) and its complexity, this is understandable.
The goal of this lecture is to guide students into the world of Moby-Dick by explaining key points in the text, as well as the historical and cultural background of the novel. Through this close reading, we will consider grand issues that the novel addresses, such as what it means to be American, what the individual is, and what democracy means.
No prior knowledge of Melville or Moby-Dick is required for the course. However, since this is a class focused on deeply engaging with a single work, it is advisable that students have a genuine interest in literature. Excerpts from the novel in translation will be copied and distributed for students to read as preparation for each session, so it is important to commit to the reading and come to class prepared.

アメリカ文学の精読を通じ、語学的に正確に読解することはもちろん、作品の背後にある歴史的・文化的コンテクストに留意しながら作品解釈することをを目指す。また、毎週のレスポンスペーパーの執筆を通じて、論理的な文章を書く力を涵養する。

19世紀アメリカの文豪ハーマン・メルヴィルの代表長編小説『白鯨』（1851）を読む。この作品は世界的名作として広く世に知られているが、その知名度に反してなかなか実際に読まれることは少ない。それもそのはず、その長大さ（翻訳にして1000ページ超）、難解さを考えれば無理もない。
そこで本講義では、講師がこの作品の読みどころ、歴史・文化背景などを説明することにより、受講者を『白鯨』の世界へと誘うことを目標とする。さらには、この作品の読解を通じて、アメリカとは何か、個人とは何か、民主主義とは何かなど、この作品が取り組んでいる壮大な諸問題について考察してみたい。
受講にあたってメルヴィルや『白鯨』に関する知識は一切必要ない。しかし、一つの作品をじっくりと読み込む講義なので、文学への興味・関心をある程度有していることが望ましい。毎授業の予習として作品の抜粋を翻訳で数十ページ読むことを求めるので、予習をしっかりこなせる覚悟をもって履修すること。
