In this course, we explore the relationship between expression, the individual, and society through the theme of “diaries.” While writing a diary may seem like a personal activity, for many Japanese people, it is first introduced as a school assignment in elementary school, making it a socially mandated practice as well. Drawing on the discussions of philosophers such as Deleuze, Foucault, and Derrida, this course examines the significance of expression beyond the binary opposition of personal interiority and social obligation.
If we extend our perspective to social media, diary-like forms of expression remain deeply familiar to us in today’s information environment. This course traces the history of how diaries have been written—and made to be written—since the modern era, while also engaging with philosophical discussions on the subject. By moving back and forth between historical analysis and theoretical exploration, the course aims to provide students with new perspectives on writing and expression in their everyday lives.

学びの精神科目
この科目では、「日記」というトピックを通して、表現・個人・社会の関係を考える。日記を書くことは一見個人的な営みだが、多くの日本人にとって日記は小学校の宿題で初めて書くものであるように、社会から要請されることでもある。ドゥルーズ、フーコー、デリダといった哲学者の議論をたよりに、この科目では個人的な内面／社会的な義務の二項対立に収まらないものとして表現することの意味を考える。

SNSまで拡張して考えれば、日記的なものは現代の情報環境のなかでもわれわれにとってきわめて身近なものだ。この授業では近代以降の社会のなかで日記がどのように書かれ／書かされてきたかという歴史を辿ることと、哲学者の議論を紹介することを往復しながら、個々人がふだんの生活のなかでの書くこと・表現することについて新たな観点で考えるきっかけを提供する。
