By the end of the course, students will be able to:
・understand the social, political, and cultural factors that have shaped modern Britain.
・analyze key issues from historical and critical perspectives.
・express their opinions on key issues from a comparative cultural viewpoint.
1. Research on “charitable giving” rankings conducted by the Charities Aid Foundation in 2020 revealed that Britain ranked twenty-second out of 114 countries, while Japan ranked the lowest. What accounts for the disparity between the two countries? This section examines the historical role of charity in British society.
2. Many Japanese perceive protest demonstrations as ineffective in influencing political change, leading to generally negative attitudes toward them. However, demonstrations can play a crucial role in raising awareness and initiating discussions on previously overlooked issues. This section investigates the significance of protest movements in Britain.
3. In April 2010, a conference held in Cairo issued demands for the return of cultural artifacts that had been taken by former colonial powers. Britain, however, has long kept ‘removed’ cultural objects on display in the British Museum under the claim of proper preservation. Was Britain a ‘looter’ or a ‘guardian’? This section delves into the history of ‘British’ cultural property.

この授業を通じて、学生は次のことができるようになることを目標とする。
いまのイギリスを形成する社会的・政治的・文化的現象への理解を深める。
主要な問題について、歴史的に、批判的に考えることができる。
文化比較の観点から、主要問題について意見を述べることができるようになる。

①「チャリティ」。2021年6月、国際チャリティ機関CAFは「思いやり」に関する調査結果を公表した。それによると、調査対象の114か国中、イギリスは22位、日本は最下位の114位であった。何がこのような差を生みだしたのか。第2～5回目授業では、イギリス社会における共生・協働の文化について考える。
②「デモンストレーション」。日本における「デモ」には否定的なイメージが付きまとう。しかし声をあげる行動は、これまで無視されてきた問題について議論するための出発点を生みだす力を持ちうる。第6～9回目授業では、イギリスにおける示威行進の意味を考える。
③「文化財返還問題」。2010年4月、「略奪」文化財問題を協議する国際会議が開かれた。イギリスは、帝国主義時代に植民地から「持ち出し」、200年近く「保存」していた文化財の返還を迫られることになった。「持ち出した」文化財を長らく管理していたイギリスは文化財の守護者なのか、それとも略奪者なのか。第10～13回目授業では、イギリスの文化財をめぐる問題について考える。
