Pessimism usually means an aversion to life, an idea or attitude that is found in all ancient and modern cultures. Christianity, for example, is a religion of hope that preaches the resurrection, but at the same time, it is undeniably a religion with pessimistic aspects. The objective of this course is to examine pessimism in religions (especially Christianity) and modern pessimism, in order to pave the way for an understanding of multiculturalism from the point of view of pessimism, as well as of pessimism itself. In addition, through studying pessimism, we will also aim to deepen our own ideas about life.
After giving an overview of pessimism, we will focus on the main figures of modern pessimism, Schopenhauer and Cioran for example, and look at their ideas individually. To better understand the cross-cultural and universal nature of pessimism, we will also examine and compare pessimism in religions and anti-natalism as contemporary pessimism.

学びの精神科目
人生には嬉しいことや楽しいこともあれば、悲しいことや苦しいこともある。このうち、後者の悲しいことや苦しいことに注目するのが、本科目で扱うペシミズムである。
ペシミズム（厭世主義・悲観主義）とは、通常、生きることを嫌悪する思想や態度を意味し、古今東西のあらゆる文化においてみられる。例えばキリスト教も、復活を説く希望の宗教であると同時に、その裏返しとして厭世的な側面を持つ宗教でもあることは否めない（これを批判したのがニーチェであった）。
しかし、ペシミズムといえども、生に対して否定的な態度をとるという仕方で、生に関わっている。この意味ではペシミズムは普遍性を持っている。生に対する歎きは空間も時間も超える。人生を嫌悪する人にとって、人生を喜びとともに享受している同時代の隣人よりも、場所も時間も遠く離れた、まったく異なる文化のなかで生きた古代人のほうが精神的に親しい、ということはありうる。
本科目は、諸宗教におけるペシミズム（とりわけ近現代ペシミズムに重要な影響を与えているキリスト教）、および近現代ペシミズムを相互検討することによって、多文化をペシミズムという観点からひもとき、さらにはペシミズムそのものについての理解を得ることを目的とする。加えて、ペシミズムについて学ぶことを通して、単に思想や宗教に関する知識を得るにとどまらず、生（人生）について各自が自分の考えを深めることをめざす。
そして、ペシミズムとは生きることへの嫌悪にとどまらず、生きることそのものを考えるうえで、そして私たち自身が生きるうえで貴重な助言となる可能性があることが、この授業を通じて理解されるだろう。

The objective of this course is to examine pessimism in religions (especially Christianity) and modern pessimism, in order to pave the way for an understanding of multiculturalism from the point of view of pessimism, as well as of pessimism itself. ペシミズムについて一般的な背景を説明した後、近代ペシミズムの主要な人物であるショーペンハウアーとシオラン、およびニーチェとカミュに焦点を合わせ、その思想を個別的に見ていく。また、ペシミズムの文化横断性と普遍性とをよりよく理解するために、諸宗教におけるペシミズムおよび、現代のペシミズムとしての反出生主義にも触れ、比較検討する。
