In this course, students will utilize French literature texts to practice their reading comprehension. Through these texts, they will analyze Christianity, beauty and life, as well as literature, becoming able to express their thoughts in a logical manner.
Within French literature, many works are grounded in Christian faith and thought. This can be attributed to the fact that Christianity, especially Catholicism, has been the mainstream religion in France from the Middle Ages to the present day. Of course, numerous non-Christian or anti-Christian beliefs and ideas have also existed and have played important roles in history and culture. In addition, the ancient religions of Greece and Rome are often regarded as the two main pillars of French literature alongside Christianity. Moreover, contemporary France is a republic that advocates republicanism, an ideology that can be seen as, in some respects, opposed to Christianity. That said, many of the literary works that have been praised and preserved as models of the French language are rooted in Christianity.
Some of these works directly express Christian beliefs and ideas. Furthermore, non-Christian or anti-Christian texts may reveal a framework of Christian thought and an enduring belief in God. In this course, we will deal with several texts that have various connections with Christianity.
We will introduce works that are well known in Japan and that represent a variety of eras (from the Middle Ages to the present) and genres (poetry, drama, novels, philosophical writings, etc.). It is essential for students to read these texts carefully, and the readings will be in Japanese translation rather than in the original French.
This year, the main texts are Blaise Pascal’s Pensées, Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, and Annie Ernaux’s A Woman’s Story (Ernaux won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2022). Other literary works may be assigned as supplementary reading, and materials other than literature may also be used as references.
Through these texts, we will consider three main themes: (1) Christianity and religiosity, (2) beauty and life, that is, various aspects of human existence, and (3) the meaning of reading and writing literary works or texts.
In addition to lectures by the instructor, this course emphasizes opportunities for students to read the texts closely, express their views, and deepen their understanding. Comment papers and other assignments are used to help students develop the ability to think and express themselves logically.
To that end, we will also cover the conventions and rules for writing short essays.
However, it is worth noting that the course syllabus may change as a result of the students, the peculiarities of the course and the social situation.

予習・復習のための課題はほぼ毎回出される。受講生は授業で扱うテキストを精読し（各回約2時間）、指示される提出物を提出しなければならない（各回約2時間）。提出にはCanvas LMSを使用する可能性がある。

学びの精神科目
フランスの文学テキストに触れ、読解する訓練を行う。これらのテキストを通して、キリスト教、美と生命、文学について考察し、自分の考えを論理的に表明できるようになる。
In this course, students will utilize French literature texts to practice their reading comprehension. Through these texts, they will analyze Christianity, beauty and life, as well as literature, becoming able to express their thoughts in a logical manner.
フランス文学には、キリスト教的な信仰・思想に基づいている作品が数多く存在する。その背景として、フランスではキリスト教（特にカトリック）が、中世から現代に至るまで、主流の宗教であることが挙げられる。もちろん、非キリスト教的、または反キリスト教的な信仰・思想も数多く存在し、歴史や文化の中で重要な役割を果たしてきた。また、ギリシア・ローマの古代宗教は、キリスト教と並んでフランス文学の2大柱と言われる。さらに現代フランスは、ある意味でキリスト教に反する思想である共和主義を掲げる国である。しかしそれでも、フランス国語の模範として称えられ、受け継がれてきた文学作品には、キリスト教に基づいているものが多いと言える。
これらの文学作品の中には、キリスト教的な信仰や思想を直接的に表現しているものもある。しかしまた、非キリスト教的、あるいは反キリスト教的なテキストから、キリスト教的な思想の枠組みや神への断ち難い信仰が浮かび上がってくる場合もある。本授業では、このようにキリスト教と様々な結びつきを持つテキストをいくつか扱う。
日本でもよく知られた作品、そしてなるべく多様な時代（中世～現代）やジャンル（詩、演劇作品、小説、思想書など）に属するテキストを紹介する。受講生がこれらテキスト（もちろん仏語原文でなく日本語訳）を読むことがまず重要だ。
本年は、ブレーズ・パスカル『パンセ』、ヴィクトル・ユゴー『レ・ミゼラブル』、そして2022年にノーベル文学賞を受賞した作家アニー・エルノーの『ある女』を扱う。また参考文献として、他の文学作品を読むこともある。参考文献には文学作品以外の資料も使うことがある。
これらのテキストを扱いながら、①キリスト教や宗教性についてのテーマ、②美と生命、すなわち人間の様々な様相に関するテーマ、③文学作品を読んだり書いたりすることの意味に関わるテーマについて考察する。
授業では、担当教員による講義に加えて、受講生自身がテキストを精読し、意見を述べ、考察を深める機会を重視する。コメントペーパーや課題を通して、論理的に考え、表現する力を養うことを目標とする。そのために、小論文の書き方、ルールについても見ていく。
学習者やクラスの特質、および社会的状況に合わせて授業計画を変更する場合がある。
