Through concrete readings of literary works published in Quebec, Canada, students will be able to reflect on the role that literature plays in a society where people of diverse origins coexist.
Quebec, in Canada, occupies a specific position as the French-speaking region of North America. Since the 1980s, it has actively welcomed not only Indigenous people, but also immigrants and exiles, and has accumulated a great deal of experience on how people of diverse origins can coexist. Expectations for literature there are also extremely high.
In this course, after an overview of Quebec’s history and modern society, students will read excerpts from the works of three authors. The first is Kim Thúy (1968-), who arrived from Vietnam as a boat people at the age of 10, the second is Dany Laferrière (1953-), who fled the dictatorship of Haiti, and the third is an Indigenous writer, Naomi Fontaine (1987-). Students will examine what these French-speaking writers communicate to Quebec society, what readers try to receive from them and what they try to share with each other.
The text will be prepared in Japanese (including provisional translations), so no particular knowledge of French is required.
It depends on the number of participants and the situation, but as the theme of the course is communication, we will emphasize interactive activities, including feedback, as much as possible.

カナダ・ケベック州で出版される文学作品の具体的な読解を通して，多様な出自の人々が共存する社会で文学が果たす役割を考察できるようになる。
Through concrete readings of literary works published in Quebec, Canada, students will be able to reflect on the role that literature plays in a society where people of diverse origins coexist.
カナダ・ケベック州は北米のフランス語圏として独特な位置を占めている。先住民はもとより，1980年代以降は移民や亡命者なども積極的に受け入れ，多様な出自の人々が共生する方法について多くの経験を蓄積してきた。そこでは文学にたいする期待もきわめて大きい。
本講義では，ケベックの歴史や現代社会を概観したのち，3人の作家の作品を抜粋で講読する。１人目は10歳のときにベトナムからボートピープルとして到着したキム・チュイ（1968-），2人目はハイチの独裁政権を逃れてきたダニー・ラフェリエール（1953-），3人目は先住民作家のナオミ・フォンテーヌ（1987-）である。フランス語で表現するこれらの作家はケベック社会にたいして何を発信し，読者は彼らから何を受け取ろうとしているのか，彼らは互いに何を共有しようとしているのか考察する。
テキストは日本語版（仮訳を含む）を用意するので，フランス語の知識はとくに必要としない。
受講者の人数や状況にもよるが，コミュニケーションをテーマとする授業なので，フィードバックも含めて可能なかぎり双方向的なやりとりを重視しながら授業を進めていく。
