Students with an interest in the Philippines will be able to acquire basic knowledge of Philippine society.
By learning about Japan–Philippines relations—through topics such as the Japanese military occupation during World War II, banana industry, and Japan’s ODA (Official Development Assistance)—students will gain perspectives for understanding the Philippine society in relation with Japan and Japanese society.
Students will gain knowledge to envision the future of Japan–Philippines relations.
This course is designed for students with a strong interest in the Philippines and aims to deepen students’ understanding of Philippine society through lectures and discussions organized around five themes. The five themes are: I. History, II. Bananas, III. Overseas Filipino Workers, IV. Armed Conflicts in the Southern Philippines, and V. Japan’s ODA (Official Development Assistance). In each theme, particular emphasis will be placed on the historical and contemporary context of Japan–Philippines relations.
By examining these themes, students will cultivate analytical perspectives that enable them to understand Philippine society in relation with Japan and Japanese society. The students will depenen their knowledge through discussions in the class. Rather than engaging in passive learning, students are encouraged to conduct their own research on each theme, exchange insights with classmates, reflect on Japan–Philippines relations, and explore future Philippines-Japan relations.

この授業では、フィリピンに関心がある学生を対象として、５つのテーマに分けて講義とディスカッションを行い、同社会についての理解を深めることを目指します。５つのテーマとは、I. 歴史、II. バナナ、III. 海外出稼ぎ労働、IV. フィリピン南部の武力紛争、V. ODA（政府開発援助）です。それぞれのテーマを学ぶにあたっては、とくに当該テーマにおける日比関係に焦点を当てることとします。それにより、日本や日本社会とのつながりにおいてフィリピン社会を理解する視点を培います。授業では、可能な限りディスカッションを取り入れます。受動的に講義を受けるのではなく、テーマについて自ら調べ、受講生と意見交換をしながら日比関係を歴史的に振り返り、将来の日比関係について考察をしていきましょう。
