This course explores themes related to intercultural communication through the lens of translation studies and practical translation activities. Students will first learn foundational theories of translation studies and then focus on the evolution of translation technologies, with particular attention to the principles, mechanisms, and applications of the latest generative AI tools. The course also examines the similarities and differences between generative AI and traditional translation methods, considering their societal impact and the possibilities and limitations of their application. These concepts and theories will be applied to everyday translation practices to delve deeper into the relationship between language and culture and the dynamics of intercultural communication.
This course is designed for motivated students who wish to explore issues related to intercultural communication from the perspective of translation studies.
The course particularly focuses on the role of translation in social media and video content. Students will learn about the latest translation technologies, including generative AI, alongside traditional translation methods, and will discuss their comparative features and practical applications. Additionally, the course aims to help students utilize this knowledge to explore ways to build better communication with culturally diverse audiences through hands-on translation and localization activities.
Class activities will revolve around individual presentations, pair work, small-group, and large-group activities, primarily discussions. Through these activities, students will develop a deeper understanding of intercultural issues while connecting translation theory with practice, fostering the ability to engage in more effective dialogue across cultures.

Please follow the requirements for the General University Courses and the General University Curriculum (Comprehensive) F courses. This course will be taught basically in Japanese. Students are expected to read and listen to English materials(academic papers, handouts, visual case studies, and so on) provided before and during the classroom.

本授業は、異文化コミュニケーションに関連する課題を翻訳学の視点から探求する意欲的な学生を対象としています。
特に、SNSや動画コンテンツの翻訳が果たす役割に焦点を当てます。講義では、生成AIを含む最新の翻訳技術や従来の翻訳手法を学び、それらの比較や適用可能性について議論します。また、これらの知識を活用し、実際の翻訳・ローカリゼーション活動を通じて、文化的に異なる他者とより良いコミュニケーションを構築する方法を模索します。
授業は、個人発表、ペアワーク、小グループおよび大グループでの活動（主にディスカッション）を中心に進められ、受講生が翻訳学の理論と実践を結びつけながら、異文化間の課題を深く理解し、より効果的な対話を実現する力を養うことを目指します。
