Students will learn, through hands-on practice, how to accurately understand English texts and render them into appropriate and natural Japanese. The course also aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills required of professional translators.
Course Methods and Expectations
In each class, students will translate English-language essays, short stories, news articles, and other texts into Japanese. Together, we will examine essential aspects of translation, including accurate comprehension of English texts, refining Japanese prose, effective dictionary usage, internet-based research techniques, and the appropriate use of AI tools.
Weekly Assignments and Class Preparation
A translation assignment will be provided each week. Students are expected to complete their translations in advance and come prepared for class. In each class, students are required to submit translations of several selected sentences from the assignment. Outstanding translations may be shared and discussed during class for collective learning.
In-Class Activities and Review
During class, we will review and edit sample translations on-screen, comparing them with instructor-provided translations in order to discuss practical approaches to translation. Following each session, detailed lecture notes will be distributed, which students are expected to review thoroughly.
Student Participation
Students are expected to translate the assigned texts independently, engage closely with the instructor’s explanations, and actively ask questions to clarify their understanding.

毎回翻訳課題を出すので、自分で訳出して講義に臨むのが望ましい。毎回数行の翻訳の提出を求める。講義後は詳細な講義録も配布するので、復習もすること。

英語の能力は特に問わないが、英語を本気で学習したい者、翻訳に興味がある者の受講を望む。毎回配布するテキスト、講師訳、講義録をよく読んでおかないと、最終試験で及第点は取れないと思われる。
No specific level of English proficiency is required; however, the course is intended for students who are serious about studying English and have an interest in translation. Students who do not carefully read the assigned texts, instructor translations, and lecture notes distributed each week are unlikely to earn a passing grade on the final examination.

毎回、英語で書かれたエッセイ、小説、ニュース記事ほかを日本語に訳出する。英文の読み方、訳文の練り方、辞書の使い方、インターネットによる調査法、AI の活用法など、翻訳に必要なことを一緒に考える。毎回翻訳課題を出すので、各自事前に訳して講義に臨むことを期待する。そのうちの何センテンスかの翻訳は毎回提出すること。すぐれた訳例は講義でも紹介する。
講義では、こちらで用意した訳例をパソコン上で添削しながら、講師訳も示しつつ、翻訳の実践方法について論じる。講義後は詳細な講義録も配布するので、復習も行うこと。
自ら英文を日本語に訳したうえで講師の解説をしっかり聞き、疑問があれば積極的に質問してほしい。
