【Course Objectives】

This course lectures on the structure of environmental problems, their historical background, and the current state of policy responses, which constitute one of the central challenges of contemporary society. The course also introduces the basic rules and norms of academic inquiry. Through this course, students will acquire the following abilities:

1. The ability to understand the processes of interaction between human society and environmental problems.

2. The ability to comprehend fundamental concepts such as common-pool resource problems and externalities.

3. The ability to explain the historical development of environmental problems and the current status of countermeasures.

4. The ability to practice the basic rules and norms required for academic work.

【Course Contents】

This course covers (1) the relationship between environmental issues and human society, (2) the values of the environment, and (3) concrete examples of environmental problems and policy responses. Specifically, the course first explains the mechanisms through which environmental problems arise and the fundamentals of environmental policy, and then addresses selected topics such as the management of fisheries resources and biodiversity conservation. The course also introduces the importance of previous studies and basic methods for identifying and reviewing academic literature, thereby providing an introduction to research practices. Through this course, students will develop an understanding of the structure of environmental problems and their connections with other social challenges, as well as acquire fundamental academic skills necessary for conducting research.
