Throughout this course, students will learn how to:
Identify and describe different modes and genres of communication, recognizing examples of each in various contexts. (L)
Recognize key principles and elements of effective multimodal communication, considering cultural and formal factors. (C)
Select and report on (L) examples of multimodal communication in a variety of modes, genres, and discourses.
Evaluate multimodal texts in English in order to deconstruct the interplay of text, image, and sound in terms of how meaning is constructed. (C)
Critically assess the impact of culture on multimodal communication, recognizing potential stereotypes and biases in cultural representations. (C)

This course is designed to deepen the student’s understanding of the nature of communication through analyzing a variety of communication modes (i.e., written, spoken, and visual) present in different platforms. This will include printed and audio materials, video clips, movies, SNS and other digital materials. Students are expected to learn relevant communication theories to initiate individual and group-based projects to search, find, and analyze materials of their choice and to present how the materials are structured to communicate possible meanings.
