Content Objectives (What you will learn):
Evolution of Communication - Understand how communication has changed over time—from talking and writing to digital media.
Using Theory - Learn to use academic theory to explain how people share ideas.
Visual Analysis - Learn to read pictures and videos to understand how people structure.
Design and Presentation Tools - Learn how to use a variety of tools that will be helpful in both your university career, and in your professional life afterwards.
Design and Creation - Use design rules (like CRAP: Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, Proximity) to make a great website and a short video.
Language Objectives (What you will do in English):
New Vocabulary - Learn and use new English words about communication (for example: mode, affordance, stereotype).
Structures for Analysis - Learn and practice grammatical structures that will enable you to analyse materials.
Language for Presentation - You will learn about how language is used in different types of presentation, and will present on various topics yourself.
Speaking Skills - the class will have plenty of opportunities to discuss topics with classmates, meaning you have a chance to improve your English fluency.
Reflecting - You will practice speaking and writing by reflecting on what we study in class.
Multimodal communication means using various methods, or "modes," like speech, writing, gestures, visuals, and sound, together to convey meaning, enhancing understanding and expression.
In this course, you will learn how people communicate using more than just words. We will analyse various types of communication, such as gestures, advertising, and social media videos, in order to enhance our understanding of communication and improve our communication skills.
Of course, you will not only study, you will also create. There will be many chances to put your learning into practice, such as building your own Google Site and producing a short-form video in English. These projects will help you use new design rules and communication theories to become a more confident and creative communicator.

| 3 | Non-Verbal Communication Non-verbal communication means how people communicate using gestures, facial expressions, and posture. We will analyse non-verbal communication, and also practice using it effectively. |

| 5 | Genre and Meaning Learn about the conventions of genres, such as news images, advertisements, and social media memes. Discuss how the purpose and audience changes meaning. |
| 6 | Visual Meaning in Context Discuss how the cultural and social background of images changes the meaning, and learn about the importance of context. |
| 7 | Design Principles Compare Eastern and Western design culture, before focusing on a popular design methodology. |
| 8 | Short Presentations Give a short presentation which analyses an image of your choice. |
| 9 | Video as Multimodal Communication Learn how images, sound, text and timing are combined in videos to create modern multimodal communication. Analyse short videos in order to practice. |
