【Course Objectives】

During this course, students will learn:
Appropriate structure of academic discourse methods including debates, presentations and symposium-style discussions (C)
Details and cutting-edge debates in relation to global issues in a variety of subject areas (C)
Language and skills relevant to communication in academic settings such as conferences and symposium-style discussions and debates (L)
Language used to explain content knowledge relevant to understanding and solving current global issues (L)

【Course Contents】

This course provides students with the opportunity to address global issues collaboratively in groups of different majors and exchange their ideas and solutions. Groups will be decided according to the number of enrolled students. Example topics covered include Rikkyo’s undergraduate majors such as “business and management,” “environment and tourism,” “community and social welfare,” “health and well-being,” “politics and law,” “science and technology,” “religion and philosophy,” and “communication and culture.”

Students will acquire communication skills necessary for both formal and informal academic speech, discussions, and writing, including evidence-based academic communication styles, citations, and referencing. They will also acquire critical and creative thinking skills, such as analyzing global issues and synthesizing ideas and discussions to present their solutions.
