Throughout this CLIL course, students will learn how to:
1) Use note taking strategies to understand the main points of lectures and videos. (L)
2) Discuss their ideas with classmates in response to lectures or class readings. (L)
3) Write summaries and short responses to lectures, videos or class readings. (L)
4) Understand the past, present and future directions of globalization and business. (C)
5) Understand the implications of globalization for management practices (C )
6) Collaborate with classmates to create research-based presentations on a relevant topic (C )
(L = language objective including communication, C = content objective)
In this course, students will delve into the convergence of globalization and business, with a specific focus on honing creative and critical thinking skills through the examination of case studies and developing solutions to real world business problems. The curriculum underscores the analysis of business case studies to elucidate both the advantages and disadvantages inherent in the interplay of globalization and business. An overview of various topics will be explored, including marketplace competition, cultural issues at the workplace, and social responsibilities. Students will actively participate in researching and scrutinizing their own specific areas of interest and engaging in critical reflection on relevant issues. Through fostering active involvement in class discussions, self-initiated research endeavors, and collaborative projects, the course aims to empower students to formulate opinions and effectively articulate their reasoning on multifaceted topics.
More specifically, this course will give students an understanding of how globalization has affected businesses around the world, and provide them with guidance on the type of skills they need to be successful in the modern global business world. By examining business styles and how they different from country to country using the Hofstede Insight’s Culture Compass tool students will be able to analyze how they should alter their approach when dealing with business people from different nations. Students will also develop some specific business focussed skills like Business Writing, Creativity, Discussion Skills, Marketing Skills, Meeting Skills, Negotiations, Note Taking, Presentations, Research Skills, and Teamwork. These will enable them to successfully participate in the global business world in a variety of settings. The course will end with a capstone team project working on a real business issue from a real company/industry. They will exexamine the issues and problems and in their teams work on solutions to these problems utilising the skills learned on the course. They will then give a final team presentation in the final weeks of the course showcasing their ideas and bringing everything together into an inclass presentation and withj all their materials (slideshowsm reports, bio’s etc) uploaded onto a Google Site each team makes.
