【Course Objectives】

The content goals of this class are:
- To enable students to follow lectures, discussions, and presentations about art.
- To identify and explain basic art concepts, including the elements of art and principles of art, and analyze works of visual art using appropriate art-related terminology.
- To explore, interpret, and compare how artists express meaning and ideas related to various themes such as identity, emotion, symbolism, culture, and society.

The language goals of this class are to be able to:
- To appropriately use a range of technical vocabulary, expressions, and concepts related to modern and contemporary art
- To express evaluative comments and opinions about art using supporting reasons
- To engage in discussions about art, respond to questions, and ask follow-up questions probing for more detail during discussions.
- To develop presentation skills through class and small group presentations

【Course Contents】

​​This course is designed to introduce students to visual modern and contemporary art. In this class, students develop visual literacy skills by learning how to look at, describe, analyze, and discuss works of modern and contemporary art in English. In Unit 1, students build a foundation in art by exploring what art is, how to interpret images, the elements and principles of art, and an overview of modern and contemporary art. In Unit 2, students apply these skills through theme-based lessons that examine how artists express ideas related to different themes such as identity, emotion, symbolism, culture, society, and life. The material will be presented in English and participants will acquire essential language skills to comprehend lectures, videos, and readings. Students will acquire art-related vocabulary and concepts to engage in group discussions to question and evaluate the relevance and importance of modern and contemporary art in society.

In this class, you will be viewing a lot of artwork online. Therefore, a laptop or tablet is necessary. Using a phone to look at artworks is insufficient.

Language & Participation: Active participation in English is required. This class is taught in English and students are required to use English in the class discussions, activities, assignments, and project work. Students are expected to actively participate in all activities in and out of the classroom. This includes previewing and reviewing all materials before and after each class.

Homework: In order to participate actively, homework is expected to be completed and submitted before the deadline. This includes when you are absent. If you are absent, please contact either your classmates or instructor if you cannot come to class. Also, please contact either your classmates or instructor and ask if there are any materials distributed in class that you have missed.

Certain lesson topics and activities may change due to time or student interest.
