The content goals of this class are:
•To enable students to examine how culture influences how they construct their own identity/identities.
•To understand how stereotyping and prejudice can influence how we see others, specifically those from other cultures
•To consume media critically to examine how it represents and misrepresents people from other cultures
The language goals of this class are:
•To describe, evaluate, and explain the viewpoints and practices of their own and other social groups, showing awareness of the implicit values on which judgements and prejudices are frequently based
•To synthesize information from a number of sources and use it to produce an essay which develops an argument, giving reasons in support of a particular point of view
•To understand and evaluate the main ideas of discourse on the subject of intercultural communication
In this class, students will learn about their own culture as well as those of other countries. They will learn about various issues across different cultures. In this course, students will examine intercultural communication from the perspectives of identity (how we construct our own cultural identity), othering (how we see others), and representation (how others are depicted by society and the media).
