The aims of this course are for students to gain a greater understanding of health and wellness. Students will be required to think critically each week on contemporary topics. Students will often work in groups to complete in-class tasks and presentations. The main goal is improving students’ listening, speaking, reading, writing and critical thinking skills.
Throughout this course. Students will learn how to: 1. Understand and use necessary academic vocabulary for health & wellness topics; 2. Present ideas about the topics in an original way and inquire about classmates’ ideas via discussions; 3. Administer new knowledge of the target academic field and make connections to their own experiences in discussions and presentations; 4. Cooperate with classmates on the achievement of these goals; 5. Discuss issues related to physical and mental health and wellness; 6. Consider health and wellness from personal and societal viewpoints; 7. Develop problem-solving skills related to health and wellness; 8. Think critically about health and wellness in the modern world; 9. Develop presentation skills to enable effective advocacy for good health and wellness.
In this course students will explore fundamental concepts related to physical and mental health and wellness. The course begins with ways that health and wellness can be improved by the individual, followed by focussing on various other aspects of health-related topics. The topics to be discussed include nutrition, exercise, stress management, mental health, work-life balance, mindfulness and public health. There will be plenty of English discussion related to the topics, along with a focus on researching and developing knowledge in the areas. You will also have a chance to improve not only your English skills, but also academic skills, such as problem-solving, debating, and critical thinking. Authentic, relevant content will be sequenced each week to improve students’ academic listening and speaking skills. Students will also build their vocabulary and further enhance the discussion skills learned in their first year while learning about a variety of topical issues, both domestic and global. Classes each week will include listening, critical thinking, reading, writing, and speaking tasks.

2 | 2 The Basics: Sleeping and Eating How are these basics defined by you. Different sleep and nutrition around the world. Discuss how healthy your lifestyle is in terms of sleep and nutrition. Ways to incorporate superfoods into our diet. |
3 | 3 Mental Health: Managing Stress Understand the impact of stress on health and wellness. Analyse the stresses of university life and discuss coping strategies. Discuss effective ways to manage stress. |
4 | 4 Mental Health Issues Understand common mental health issues and devise strategies to raise public awareness. How are disorders viewed in Japan and abroad? Discuss what makes good mental health. What are some common mental health problems and how are they treated. |
5 | 5 Intellectual Health in the Digital World Discuss and evaluate our hobbies and pastimes and how they relate to our wellbeing. Understand the importance of intellectual wellness. Identify problems and solutions to some key challenges to intellectual health in the modern world. |
6 | 6 Emotions Discuss moods and emotions. Enhance understanding of empathy and emotional intelligence. Analyse and describe the causes and effects of emotions. |
7 | 7 Midterm assessment: Short presentation (5-10 minutes) on a topic or related topic that we have discussed, and group discussions reflecting about the contents. |
8 | 8 Going Green: Gamechangers – A focus on vegetarianism and veganism. Discuss how the vegan diet may or may not improve health. |
9 | 9 Fad or fiction: An examination of recent health fads. Discuss some recent health fads and the merits and demerits of them. |
10 | 10 Alcohol & substance abuse Discuss how alcohol and substance abuse affect mental and physical health. What are addiction and substance abuse? What causes these issues and how are they treated? How do they affect daily life in society and in universities. How to make good choices. |
11 | 11 Public Health Understand health issues in different communities. Identify some key issues and predict future issues. |
12 | 12 Mindfulness Discuss the principles of Mindfulness. Consider how students can incorporate these principles into their daily lives. |
