Overview
In this semester’s class, we will focus on the twin themes of diversity and identity. Both in Japan and in other countries, diversity creates challenges and opportunities for society. The presence of people from various cultures forces us to ask questions about who we are and what it means to be a member of our society. Japan is often considered to be lacking in diversity, both now and in the past. We will examine and question this belief by diving into Japan’s fascinating history of diversity. We will look at how both immigration and emigration have played and continue to play important roles in Japan's development.
Through this class, you will:
• Understand how cultural and ethnic diversity has shaped Japan’s past and present
• Research and engage with members of the society who represent diversity in order to better understand their experiences
• Understand the causes and effects of immigration and emigration in the context of wider social and global trends
