This course is designed for students to study literature in English while developing their language skills. Students will be encouraged to develop an informed and perceptive understanding of literature in today's society using multiple perspectives and critical thinking. Course content will support the use of language strategies to read and respond to literary texts using concepts from critical theory and the broad field of English studies. Individually and in groups, students will discuss and react to various literary texts. Students will select texts related to their own interests and will work on a creative and interactive presentation at the end of the course.
Throughout this course, students will learn how to
1. describe and analyse features of literature and contemporary literary trends (C)
2. show understanding of language and literary features such as narrative structure and theme (C)
3. apply knowledge of contemporary literature in society in reflective writing and presentations (C)
4. understand a clearly structured lecture, and take notes on major points (L)
5. understand and use target specialist vocabulary required in 1) academic lectures and 2) literary topics (L)
6. respond appropriately using questions and responses in discussions and presentations (L)
*L = Language goal, C= Content goal

● Children and young adult literature
● Trends in literature and reading in society
● Critical reading (reader response, feminist reading, post-colonial, post-structuralism)
● Global literature
● Gender issues and literature
● Social issues through literature
● Ethical reading and ethical questions in literature

● Decolonising the curriculum
● Paper books vs. digital reading
● School-based literature learning vs. `in the wild` reading
● Effects of banning books
● Creative remixing and adaptations of literature

This course will utilize Google Classroom for all assignments.
Students should bring a laptop computer to every class. If a student does not own a laptop computer, he/she can borrow a laptop from the Rikkyo Media Center. A tablet/iPad with a keyboard is an option, but not recommended.

Language & Participation: The language of use for this course is English. Students are required to use English in classroom activities, interactions and assignments. Students are expected to preview and review all materials constantly and actively participate in classroom activities.
Absences: Even when you are absent, you are expected to submit your homework assignments on time. Please contact either your classmates or instructor if you cannot come to class. Also, please contact your classmates or instructor and ask if there were any materials distributed in class that you have missed.
CLIL: This course applies a dual-focused educational approach in which an additional language is used for the teaching and learning of both content and language. Students will encounter and consolidate the language and discourse patterns they need to understand and engage with content from literature.
