This course provides students with basic academic knowledge related to Humanities, in particular society and social phenomena (sociology), human experience, emotions, and mentality (psychology), and human languages and cultures (linguistics). The course also aims to help students improve their language learning strategies and academic skills (vocabulary, surveying, data-collecting/analysis, critical thinking, discussion, presentation, etc.).
Each week, students will learn a new academic concept by reading an assigned text. A mini lecture on each week’s topic will be given by the instructor, followed by student discussion to better understand the topic. The topics will include gender equality and stereotypes (sociology), stress, anxiety, and mental strength (psychology), and linguistic relativity, speech acts, and discourse analysis (linguistics).
