In terms of content goals, by the end of the course students will be able to:
1. follow lectures, discussions, and presentations about art.
2. understand and respond to detailed descriptions of subjects and issues related to art.
3. synthesize information from contemporary art-based sources and present the findings in a clear and concise manner.
4. compare artworks, and distinguish themes and styles, within and across eras.
In terms of language goals, by the end of the course students will be able to:
5. appropriately use a range of technical vocabulary, expressions, and concepts to describe and compare artworks from various periods in history.
6. respond and ask follow-up questions probing for more detail during art-related discussions.
7. express evaluative comments and opinions about art.
This course is designed to provide participants with a basic chronological introduction to the history of global art. The movements, issues, styles, techniques, and topics of each defining era will be discussed through analysis of example artworks and artists from that time. We will be examining some of the most important artists and art of each era through presentation, close-looking, and discussion-based inquiry to understand the aesthetic and societal influences of each time period. The material will be presented in English and participants will acquire essential language skills to comprehend lectures, videos, and readings. Students will acquire art-related vocabulary and concepts to engage in group discussions to question and evaluate the relevance and importance of historical and modern art in society.

4 | Baroque, rococo, and indigenous art. |
5 | Neoclassicism, romanticism, and global encounters. |
6 | Review. Mid-term presentation preparation. |
7 | Mid-term presentations (a comparison of two artworks). |
8 | Realism and impressionism. |
9 | Post-impressionism and symbolism. |
10 | Cubism, futurism, expressionism, and surrealism. |
11 | Abstract expressionism and pop art. |
12 | Contemporary art (including digital and installation art) and globalisation. |
13 | Review. Final presentation preparation. |
14 | Final presentations (student-curated gallery tour). |

There will be a lot of class-based, student-led discussion, so a proactive and positive attitude to speaking in class is expected. Certain activities and assessments my change from being individual work to group work depending on the number of class participants. |
At Rikkyo University, students are required to spend 45 hours of study (including class time) per credit.
