【Course Objectives】

By the end of this CLIL course, students will be able to…
- Describe in detail personal interpretations of films, outlining reactions to certain features (outlined in the weekly schedule) and explaining their significance. (C)
- Evaluate how films follow the conventions of genre. (C)
- Describe how films engage the audience (e.g. by building up and subverting expectations). (C)
- Follow films even when they include slang, idiomatic usage, nuance, and implied meaning. (L)
- Give clear, well-structured presentations about film, expanding and supporting points of view at some length with sub-themes, reasons and relevant examples. (L)

【Course Contents】

The main in-class activities will be discussions about short movie clips in relation to the themes shown in the weekly schedule. The main out of class activity will be to watch at least 9 English movies and keep a diary. The diary will include the application of the themes discussed in class to the films watched outside of class. Each week, the diaries will be shared in groups. Other assignments are indicated in the weekly schedule.

The main out of class activity is to watch at least 9 English movies and keep a diary. There are 2 poster presentations and one final presentation, which also need to be prepared outside of class. More details and templates for completing the assignments will be provided on Canvas.

Outside of class, access to films through a streaming service (Netflix/Amazon Prime/Hulu, etc.) will be useful to watch English movies and keep a diary about the movies. You can also borrow DVDs from the Rikkyo University libraries:

Group size for discussions will depend on the class size, but will be a maximum of 5 people (including for the Poster Presentation). The Final Presentation will be given by students to the whole class using PowerPoint.

The movie clips in class will be chosen with the aim to include everyone (e.g. no extreme violence or horror). However, if you feel uncomfortable when watching a movie clip in class, it is always OK to stop watching (look away, step outside the class, etc.)
