【Course Objectives】

Students will be able to:


1. understand a wide range of real-life spoken English from speakers with different accents and backgrounds, including slang and informal expressions.
2. make social and cultural guesses about meanings, backgrounds, and relationships between speakers.
3. follow long and sometimes unstructured speech.
4. understand technical spoken and written language, as well as ideas, from a new subject area.
5. express their ideas and opinions fluently and connect them to what other speakers say during discussions.
6. organize and share their ideas clearly, including main topics, sub-topics, and a conclusion.
7. write a clear and well-structured essay or give a short presentation, discussing different aspects of movies and sharing their opinions in the correct style for writing/presenting.

【Course Contents】

This course is designed to help students better understand the theory and practical processes involved in filmmaking while improving their language skills. Students will learn about and discuss different aspects of films. They will listen to explanations in the style of Western lectures, watch clips related to filmmaking, and talk about them. The course will focus on communication and interaction, helping students learn the content and improve their language skills for discussion. Homework will include essays, reports or short presentations on the themes covered in class. There will also be practical group projects, including a final film project, where students will share ideas, listen to others, and work together. Students will use all their reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills to make the most of their learning and improve their language ability.

【授業計画 / Course Schedule】

1 Introduction to course
2 Topic focus: Plot. Homework: Watch an English language film and write a paper discussing the plot using the theories from today’s lesson.
3 Topic focus: Characters. Homework: Give examples of Propp’s characters from films you have seen. Write a paragraph to explain each using knowledge you gained in today’s lesson.
4 Topic focus: Lighting. Homework: Watch an English language film and write a paper discussing the lighting and its effects using the theories from today’s lesson.
5 Topic focus: Sound. Homework: Watch an English language film and write a paper discussing the sound and its effects using the theories from today’s lesson.
6 Topic focus: Camera angles. In class/homework task: With your group try to film examples of the camera angles you learned about in today’s lesson.
7 Topic focus: Costumes and props. Homework: Design a costume and one prop for the six character descriptions given and write a paragraph for each to explain how the costume and the prop represent their character.
8 Script writing. Homework: Write a script for a short film idea using the script writing principles learned in class.
9 Ideas for films and storyboarding. Homework: Draw a storyboard for your film idea
10 Shooting short films
